The fourth-largest thread is about one shift the group kept living through and re-describing: the move from doing atomic work โ€” tasks, functions, units โ€” to doing architecture โ€” systems, orchestration, the shape of the whole.

Nobody was promoted into this. The tools pushed everyone up the stack whether they were ready or not.


the arc

2024: projects as objects. Early sessions are about things you build โ€” MLM and blockchain experiments, specific apps, discrete projects. The unit of thought is the deliverable.

Late 2024 into 2025: design enters. User experience and design become explicit topics. David builds a task-management tool. The question shifts from "what should this do" to "how should this be shaped."

Mid 2025: planning at system scale. Alberta Energy Regulator project planning, data-platform differences. The hard decisions are architectural โ€” which platform, which data flow โ€” not which feature.

Late 2025: ecosystem awareness. Cohere's position in the Canadian AI ecosystem. Thinking about where you sit in a larger system, not just what you ship into it.

2026: the shift named. Slop-code culture forces the question โ€” if the code is cheap and disposable, what's not cheap? The answer the group converges on is the architecture, the control plane, the system thinking. By spring it's explicit: the move to system thinking and orchestration is the job.


what it means

Developers were trained to do atomic work โ€” small, well-defined tasks, done well. LLMs are excellent at exactly that atomic layer. So the human contribution moves to where the machine is weak: deciding what system to build, how the pieces fit, which decision-gates matter, what "good" even means here.

This reframes the corpus's anxiety. "AI will do my job" is really "AI will do the atomic part of my job" โ€” which was never the valuable part, just the visible one. The corollary is uncomfortable. People who only ever did atomic work, and never built the muscle for architecture, have the most to lose and the least practice at what's left.

This thread is the spine the others hang on. Agentic work is atomic-to-architecture applied to who does the task โ€” you direct, the swarm executes. Context engineering applies it to what the model gets โ€” you design the corpus, the model fills it in. Education applies it to what to teach โ€” the meta-skill, not the task.

Every major thread in the corpus is the same promotion: stop doing the unit, start designing the system that does the units.


The atomic layer commoditized. The architectural layer didn't. The closer your work was to a discrete task, the faster it was absorbed. The closer it was to system design, the more it held.

Atomic work had built-in feedback โ€” it compiled or it didn't. System thinking fails slowly and quietly. The corpus has the question โ€” how do you know โ€” and applied to architecture the answer is harder, because the errors don't surface for months. Closing that gap is the work the rest of the book points at.
